Winter Skin with Dermal Therapist Sharon Devane

We chat to Dermal Therapist Sharon Devane from Lovoir Skin Body & Beauty in Christchurch about prepping your skin for the winter months…

How long have you been a skin therapist, and what made you decide to work in the industry?

I’ve been in the industry for over 9 years now, and I love to help people feel confident in their own skin and to educate my clients about effective skincare. The biggest reward I can get is helping a client achieve their ultimate skin goals.

As we head into winter, what sort of changes can we see in our skin, and why is this?

Coming into winter, our skin can suffer from exposure to temperature changes. As temperature and humidity levels drop and the heating is cranked up, our skin is vulnerable to dryness. As the levels of natural protective and hydrating oils drop, this results in a build up of skin cells, redness, irritation and an overall tight or dry feeling. Using hot water to cleanse our faces can also affect hydration, so warm water is always best.

Is it best to switch up or skincare routine for the cooler season?

At this time of year extra hydration and gentle exfoliation is important to optimise cell function and ensure our skin is turning over properly, giving it a gorgeous glow. A good hyaluronic acid serum and natural oils, like those in the O Cosmedics Youth Activating Oil Balm, help to hydrate and nourish the skin. It’s also beneficial to use a gentle exfoliation such as the O Cosmedics 3-in-1 Fruit Peel Mask to help nudge any stubborn skin cells from the top layers of the skin. This applies to the body too! Don’t forget to exfoliate and moisturise the rest of your skin, it is the largest organ of the body after all.

What about skin treatments, are there any that are better done in winter?

Due to decreased sun exposure, winter is the best time to have treatments such as Dermapen Microneedling and IPL to boost collagen production and correct conditions such as pigmentation. Nourishing treatments that gently exfoliate and boost skin hydration are essential, so a regular facial can really get the skin glowing. As the shorter daylight hours can leave us feeling blue, it is also important to take the time out to treat yourself to a revitalising massage or facial, or add a happy, bright colour to those fingers or toes!

What are your must-have skin products for winter and why?

All the hydrating products! The Youth Activating Oil Balm from O Cosmedics is packed with vitamins and fatty acids to help nourish the skin and enhance the lipid barrier of the skin, encouraging it to behave like the lipid layer of a healthy 22-year-old skin. Adding in the O Cosmedics 3D Hyaluronic Serum helps to drench your skin in hydration, with 3 different molecular weights of hyaluronic acid to ensure all layers of the skin are hydrated. One of my absolute favourites is the Hydra Plus Sleep-In Mask, which is so luxuriously hydrating and full of the core anti-ageing ingredients from O Cosmedics.
