How does IPL and Laser Hair Removal work?

IPL and Laser are two different methods of long term hair removal, both working on the same principle of light energy to heat up and destroy the hair follicle. IPL (Intense Pulse Light) uses a broad spectrum of light with multiple wavelengths, emitting scattered light which targets melanin (pigment) in the hair. This energy is absorbed, converted to heat and damages the hair follicle. IPL is known to be the more gentle of the two treatments, which is great for those with sensitive skin, however, it will usually require six to eight treatments to completely remove the hair in an area.

Laser works in a similar way, however, the light source uses a stronger beam of precisely controlled pulses of energy which go deeper into the pore. This energy uses the same heating method as IPL for destroying the hair follicles. Most people will need around six laser sessions to permanently reduce hair growth. The benefit of laser is that it can be a bit more effective, usually requiring fewer treatments than IPL, however, it the treatment time can take longer, and it can be a bit more painful.

How do I choose between the two hair removal treatments?

Both laser and IPL hair removal methods are safe and FDA approved. IPL has been in use since the late 90s, with laser hair removal developed earlier in the 1960s. It’s important to know you won’t get immediate results from laser or IPL, unlike with waxing (which gives you an instantly smooth treatment area) – instead, the hairs will drop out over the next few weeks. You’ll be able to shave in between sessions to keep the area smooth in the meantime. The main benefit is that you’ll achieve permanent reduction of hair growth, with less and slower-growing hair.

If you’re still a little confused on which one to choose, make sure you have a consultation with a clinic on which treatment might be best for you. In general, IPL is usually cheaper with quicker treatment time and less pain, but laser will give you faster results and is more precise. Once you’ve booked in your treatment, ensure you shave the area 24 hours before your treatment (the light will still get to the hair follicle), exfoliate your skin and make sure you don’t have any fake tan on.
