What you should know

What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning, sometimes known as dermal planing or epidermal levelling, is both an exfoliation and hair removal treatment for the face. For this pain-free treatment, a trained skin specialist uses a sterile surgical scalpel (not a razor!) to gently scrape away dead, dull skin cells from the face, as well as removing peach-fuzz facial hair. The result is extremely smooth skin, for makeup that goes on butter smooth with a glowing finish.

Removing this layer of dry, dead skin cells also allows your active serums and other skincare products to penetrate the skin’s deeper layers, making them more effective. The treatment is perfect for those who are a little self-conscious about facial hair on the cheeks and above the lips, as foundations and powders tend to cling to these hairs (making them more obvious) and facial waxing or tweezing can often be very painful.

What else do I need to know?

Dermaplaning is performed on the face by a trained and qualified skin specialist and usually excludes the eye and nose areas. While you may see facial razors in pharmacies, Dermaplaning is a refined approach to removing dead skin cells and vellus hair with a very sharp blade that should only be done by a professional. As for your peach-fuzz hair, there’s no need to fear that this will grow back thicker after it’s been bladed. Unlike terminal hairs (like the hair on our legs) which is thicker, vellus hair will grow back to its original form.

Your skin may feel a little sensitive straight after the session since it has been exfoliated, so you’ll want to ensure you use mineral sun protection for the days after your treatment. Other than that, dermalplaning results are instant with no downtime, so your skin will be smoother and brighter straight after one session. It’s the perfect treatment to do the day or two before a big event for flawless and glowing makeup application!
